is the mic quality good enough or should that be invested in?

The built-in mic is of good enough quality for basic recording, such as dictation, notes or interviewing one person at a time.

To get broadcast quality sound, I do recommend an external mic because it allows you more flexibility in terms of recording situations (i.e., more than one person). In addition, the built-in mic can be prone to wind noise and to a thinner sound if you hold the recorder too far from the person who is speaking.

Also, I recommend setting the recorder to the highest quality setting if you are doing broadcast recording. You won’t be able to store as much audio, but the quality will be much better.
